This is a review of a split album between Russia's Drama and Finland's Perdition Winds which will be released on December 25th, 2015 as a joint effort between Satanath Records and Black Plague Records and we will start off the review with Drama a band that plays a very dark and nihilstic form of black metal.

Their side of the split starts out with a very melodic and heavy sound along with all of the musical instruments sounding very powerful and a few seconds later grim black metal screams make their presence known on the recording and the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody and also add a progressive touch to the music and on the second track the music speeds up briefly and also adds in more of a raw sound along with a decent amount of blast beats, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover nihilism, death worship, darkness and cold themes.

In my opinion Drama are a very great sounding dark and nihilistic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Gloria Mortis".

Next up is Perdition Winds a band that has had an album reviewed before in this zine and plays a satanic form of black metal.

Their side of the split starts out with a very heavy and raw sound that gets very fast and adds in blast beats and deep yet grim screams that also get high pitched at times and the song is over 13 minutes in length and the song also brings in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads have a very dark, melodic, yet catchy feeling to them and there is also a brief bass guitar lead, the production sounds very raw yet powerful while the lyrics deal Kain which is the Sumerian spelling for the biblical Cain and the cult he started.

In my opinion this is another great sounding track from Perdition Winds and if you are a fan of raw, satanic and occult black metal, you should check out their side of the split.

In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of raw, nihilistic, satanic and occult black metal.

Drama is a band from Yeisk in Russia. Ok even though this is just two songs, you have to have this as part of your collection of Black Metal. I have to say that for 2015, the third wave of Black Metal, (1st from Norway, 2nd Poland, 3rd from Russia Ukraine regions), this is some good Black Metal. The baseline is a driving force that produces some terrific grooves. The production is by far exceptional for Black Metal. All instruments are audible without anyone canceling the others. The rhythms are great and the amount of distortion is good. There is a little too much saturation of the fuzz levels but it is fine, nothing to really complain about, maybe on their next Cd they can take this down a little or equalize and compress their saturation levels. Now, even though Drama is a mid paced Black Metal band they demonstrate their full aggression in "Gloria Mortis" but yet bring it back to a nice sweeping tempo without difficulty or awkwardness in their transition. In other words they demonstrate beautiful execution of their style.
The song "Create Your Death" is by far one of the few Black Metal songs that will remain in my high rotation for the rest of my life. Truly Black Metal and powerful with great riffs and and an element of groove that is unmatched by other bands. This is one of those songs that you have to have because the band really makes you feel what they were feeling when they created their song. The only limitation is the 4 minute mark, because then the song takes a different feel and sort of sucks, but then at the 4:33 minute mark the song returns to the greatness of the beginning. Oh yeah, and then there is this solo which really showcases the talent of these guys. Drama all hails, 4 out of 5 guitar picks.

Perdition Winds is a Black Metal band from Finland and their song is "Cult of Kain". Their production is fair for a Black Metal, similar to 1347 but there is a lot of noise going on. Ok., the guitars are too disorted, and the levels are off from right to left. Bass is too low and most noticeably when the chords ring out. The guitars outweigh everybody when the instruments are in full effect. The reverb dies off too fast as evidenced by the toms in the middle break and the vocal tracks are too low during the middle break. But then the vocals regain some strength when the main riffs reenter. The length of the song works only when the rhythms change to accommodate the story of the song. Perdition Winds is a mid to fast paced Black Metal band. However, there is too much going on to clarify any of the song and even for Black Metal standards there is too much going on. When they get their groove on for time index 2 minutes and 9:20 minutes, I think it would have been better if this specific rhythm was utilized for a whole different song rather for the same "Cult of Kain". In all fairness this is song that you will listen to once or twice and then this song will go the wayside and only ever so seldom resurrecting this song from your CD song collection. If Perdition Winds was smart they would reduce the two distinct rhythms into two separate songs.

Alcohol covered, the subject of this month’s Drinking With Satan will be the Drama/Perdition Winds Split that happens to drop on, fittingly, Christmas Day. Merry Satanmas. Oh, and it drops on Satanath Records. God damn perfect.
The first side of this split features Drama’s “Create Your Death” and “Gloria Mortis”. The former of these tracks opens with a rather deliberate cadence with a very embracing percussion element to it. I mean, it’s dark, sure. But it’s structured in a rather organized fashion, making it easy on the ears. It’s hard not to tap your feet to this one and want to come back and repeat the track a few times. Not to mention that the five-plus minute track features a rather catchy chorus. Honestly, it’s just a very straightforward black metal track that listens like melodic death metal. The closing leads/solo only further that cause.

“Gloria Mortis” is longer and more technical. The precision of the early leads and blast beats are welcomed, even if they are completely cluttered. Whatever, I welcome it. The pace slows dramatically once you get into the heart of the track, becoming very doomy in style. Which, let’s be real, I’m a fan of. When you hate yourself, doom metal is awesome. In fact, this song is almost crippling in how dark and dense it is. While I think the breakdown in the middle of the song doesn’t make a ton of sense, I’m overall into it. And then the pace picks up into a consistent rhythm that is kinda hard not to become addicted to. Especially when the percussion explodes into a far more spastic pattern again. Overall, Drama has shown a reasonable amount of creativity and ability within these two tracks. Great job, gang.
The Perdition Winds side of this split is far more chaotic. It’s a single track at over 13 minutes. The production is not nearly as clean, which is kind of annoying, especially give the intricacies that are apparent in both the guitars and bass in the early stages. It makes more sense as you work through it, but it feels a bit like Perdition is trying too hard to pound its audience into submission… unsuccessfully. Or maybe that’s just my apathy talking. And then there’s that bass interlude at the six minute mark!… that doesn’t work at all. The sting of the leads that follow are quite good, however. I enjoy the way the rest of the song gallops along until its terminus. It’s adequately cohesive for this split and help ensure this thing closes as strongly as it kicked off. But there’s no question the range this split shows as a result of the earlier stages of this particular track. No at cohesive or listenable, but appreciated for its extended ambition. Or something.
One thing I want to mention, because I’m a sentimental piece of shit, is the fact that I am opening each and every one of these beers with my Metalhand.com bottle opener. I bought this fucker at Wacken and basically anything from that festival that came home with me is cherished. Actually, there’s a cool story there that I’m going to tell now because I’m drunk enough. As I was waiting for a band to play, I walked to those guys’ merch tent. I asked them how much. They didn’t speak English. So I waved money. They waved a beer. We eventually came to the understanding that if I bought something, they would give me a beer. Best beer I ever drank. True story. Isn’t that best story you’ve ever heard in the last five minutes? I love you.

In the vein of Tribulation’s The Children of the Night, Drama from Russia is a melodic Black metal act that proposes two songs of melancholic grandeur with Create Your Death and Gloria Mortis. Not that far from Dissection and even the Polish masters of Mgla their sound is obscure with a clean production that delivers. The trio formed in 2001, has already released three full length but with some line up changes came with those two new songs and a promising sound for their future material. In the Black metal world there’s a slow but interesting evolution of the melodic trend that keeps the roots of the genre without falling into the commercial territories of many more mainstream acts.

From Finland, Perdition Winds is also a black metal band that recorded a 13 minutes song for this Split record. The song Cult of Kain is a more crust punk influenced black metal track than Drama’s two songs. The melodic side of Perdition Winds is also present but with a more textbook black metal edge with blast beats, fuzzy guitars, and screams that reminds of the first wave of black metal more than the later. Perdition Winds performs an engaging amalgam of black metal that is influenced by his pioneers more than its peers. There’s a certain quality of early Mayhem and even Tormentor in their interpretation of the genre.

This is an interesting split that showcase two bands that have the potential to make great music and promising new albums. Let’s hope these previews will announce great things to come.

(BTJ)

When two black metal juggernauts meet and combine to create a split, what do you get? You end up getting thirty minutes of blasphemous hell fire laden music. There are only three songs that belong on this split, two to Drama and one to Perdition Winds, and combined you get savage black metal. Both bands compliment each other very well since they both play a relatively similar style of black metal. Both bands are rooted in traditional black metal, but each band provides a little bit of progressive elements to their songs.

Each band provides you with enough blackened atmosphere to suffocate even the most seasoned black meal enthusiast. Each song is riddled with evil and once you pop this disc in a lingering poisonous cloud pays you a visit only to hang over your head until your soul gets completely sapped from your body.

The three songs that are present are raw and unfiltered, yet they are focused and driven to drag you down to the dark and fiery depths of hell from which they came. Not all of the thirty minutes is filled with blazing and blistering black metal either. Each song breaks into a more atmospheric sound allowing you to feel the hate and isolation that was injected into each song.

Good black metal bands have always had an innate ability to make you feel a certain way, and are able to create a certain atmosphere without compromising their original goal and Drama as well as Perdition Winds provide that for you. Without having to remotely try that hard, each band makes you feel cold, isolated and as though you’ve been shoved in the dark and deprived of all of your senses.

The long run times on the three songs give both bands enough time to slaughter your morals and steal your humanity. Every minute of this split is filled with a dark essence that is both terrifying and mystifying at the same time.

The main difference between both bands is the way that both approach the same genre. They both have similar styles, but each has a different way about going about things. Drama leans more of the progressive side of black metal, whereas Perdition Winds borders more on the traditional ground and pound side. Perdition Wind’s thirteen minute trudge to hell is a pure blistering assault that really only lets up for a few minutes during the mid section of the song. After those few minutes are up, the pummeling reignites and you better be strapped in because your descent to the depths of the netherworld won’t be smooth.

Drama does have those purely blistering tendencies as well, but each of their two songs builds up to that slaughtering pace. Instead of being a purely visceral assault, Drama plays more at a mid tempo and kicks on the afterburners when needed. Really, Drama and Perdition Winds play an incredibly similar style of black metal, there are just some minor differences.

All throughout the effort you do get stinging and cutting riffs, tumultuous drumming, a thick and powerful bass and vocals that can summon the dark lord himself. On top of the blackening musicianship is the atmosphere that both bands provide, and that atmosphere comes in the form of a suffocating cloud of sulphuric lung searing black metal. This split is hellish, goulish, nasty and down right filthy and evil. In other words, it’s pure black metal and a great and purely evil split.

Ok, one more slab of blackened extremes before I go into a bit more quiet mode.  After all, I am down with the flu and high volume extreme music isn't helping in easing the headache.  But, for the sake of journalistic integrity, I'd really like to recommend this little piece of evil music.  Prepare for twenty-seven minutes of pain, despair, desolation and brutality.

Drama is a Russian band, formed early this century.  For this split, they delivered two tracks, both firmly rooted in black metal but still looking forward.   'Create Your Death' and 'Gloria Mortis' are quite complex, pretty harsh and highly immersive pieces of music, showing a melodic side to black metal, which is very welcome.  I guess you can place these guys somewhere between Opeth, Primordial and Altar Of Plagues, to name a few.  Nonetheless, these are great songs.

Finnish horde Perdition Winds does things a bit different.  True, is also black metal, but in a noisy raw, harsh and gritty form, clearly rooted in the old school version and seemingly influenced by punk.  They delivered one song, a thirteen minutes lasting epos of bleakness.  To keep such a long song interesting, you have to come up with some variation and in that, Perdition Winds certainly succeed, yet, it still is a raging monster of a song.

This is a rather super-sized edition of Shades of Black, collecting new and recently discovered music in a blackened vein. But believe me, this could have been much bigger still, because I’m sitting on a ton of other releases I’d like to include. I’ll put them in the fridge so they don’t spoil and defrost them later (though of course they’ll never completely de-frost).

LVTHN

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of this Belgian band’s previous releases, and have managed to write about most of them (collected behind this link). And before I get to a brand new LVTHN song, I’ll mention that the band have recently made their 2014 compilation release The Grand Uncreation available for “name your price” download on Bandcamp (here).

As for the new song, “Ascension into the Palace of the Dark Gods”, it’s the first track stream from the band’s forthcoming debut album Eradication of Nescience, which features cover art by Business For Satan and is projected for release in June via Fallen Empire Records (LP) and Amor Fati (CD).

“Ascension” is a scorcher, a fusillade of torrential riffs, booming bass notes, and riveting drumwork, capped by acid vocal rage and surrounded by a melodic atmosphere of chilling eeriness. That aura of arcane, blood-freezing peril becomes even more ominous when the pacing slows, and the distorted guitar notes begin to peal like some dissonant funeral bell from the far reaches of Hades.

Drama / Perdition Winds Satanath split released on 25 December 2015. A short but effective and powerful combination. Starting out with Drama. They have two songs featured on here. "Create Your Own Death", starts out with a slow and unexpected intro, it builds up into a depressing but intense journey that I really enjoyed listening to. The second song is "Gloria Mortis", a strong blast beat with catchy rhythms kicks things off and the punishment is unleashed. This song is my favorite of the two. Next up is Perdition Winds with the song "Cult of Kain", like corpses wrecking havok upon unsuspecting prey. The band offers us a song that is about thirteen minutes worth of exploration. It destroys the senses with its devastating blast and rapid tremelo guitar riffs.

Final thoughts, this split is menacing and torturous. If you like raw and relentless aggression, then look no further and add this to your collection.

http://artemortificareviews.blogspot.ru/2016/02/drama-perdition-winds-split-release.html

Perdition Winds.

Online magazine review: http://www.realgonerocks.com/2016/03/drama-perdition-winds-split-ep/

Russian black metal trio Drama have teamed up with Finnish black metal quintet Perdition Winds to bring you three songs of blasphemous black metal that’s sure to invoke spirits of the eternally departed.

Drama, who’ve actually three full length albums and various other releases to their name, play black metal more in the vein of early Immortal, Satyricon and Celtic Frost. Finland’s Perdition Winds have an album to their credit, and recorded the track “Cult Of Cain” for this split EP, and it is raw black metal, with hints of Craft, Gorgoroth, Cirith Gorgor and Satherial, at 13 minutes of pure ungodliness ever to come from a Finnish black metal outfit.

The two cuts from Drama are more in the mid-paced tempo range, with a very darkened and sinister vibe to them, but with enough cult-like morbidity to their songs: “Create Your Death” and “Gloria Mortis”. Honestly, Drama reminded so much of early Immortal and Satyricon during their primes, with their heavy as hell, blackened guitar rhythms and raspy vocals that’s sure to send evil chills to the listener’s body. Imagine caught within the confines of an eternal hell, as you keep falling to the depths with no floor to ever stop your dreadful fall. Sounds like one of those falling nightmares, huh, well it is, and the misery of evil and melancholia only gets worse with repeated spins.

Perdition Winds has only the one song, but it is very apocalyptic-sounding, with sounds of chaos at its every turn. Imagine a labyrinth of complete despair and physical suffering, and you’ll vicariously live through this band on their “Cult Of Cain” opus. Prepare to burn and die a violent death, while you expose your mind to this savage cruelty.

This 3 track split EP was released in December 2015 and is a lengthy 27 minutes long, not that this is a bad thing. The first two tracks are from Russian trio Drama, who split up before the release of this EP which is a shame. However these two songs showcase that they finished with fine form, as they are black metal and bleak in nature.

Bringing together a progressive mix of black metal and DSBM, Drama create tuneful songs that get you hooked from the out set. “Create Your Death” has a dooming intro with gritty black metal vocals, Vindsarg’s voice becomes screams of a man dieing almost. The lyrics are bleak and captivating, with heavy guitar grooves. The traditional Black metal elements of the likes of old Emperor and Darkthrone are present, but the guitar and drum mix is modern and progressive within the black metal genera. The guitar solo work is strong and flows well throughout the song.

“Gloria Mortis” starts with a blast beat drum intro, and takes you into a dark wilderness. The tempo is a strong and carries the song along well, the guitar riffs and bass lines blend beautifully together. The lyrics are well conceived and dark in nature, as they create a hellish wasteland. The guitar solo at end is beautiful, against the blackness.

Perdition Winds are a black metal band from Espoo Finland, who’s debut “Aura of Suffering” came out in 2014. Their one song on this EP is “Cult of Kain”, which in contrast to Drama is brash aggressive in its vocal style. There is heavy layers of noise through out, from the guitars and bass. The song has a good rhythm and tempo, which strips back midway into a bass and drum melody. Harrowing vocals scream in the background; as the guitar solo freely unwinds into a hypnotic gesture. At 13:05 minutes; the song has enough good riffs and hooks, however they do get lost at times.

Overall this EP is a good listen, however Drama do come out ahead. Due to their progressive and tactile sound, that caught me from the outset. Not taking anything away from Perdition Winds, except length of their offering was too long and lost its way at times.

For the xth time, Satanath Records and Black Plague Records are joining forces in order to punish the world with a merciless skull-hammering release, this time under the banner of a split in between two fine acts, Russia’s Drama and Perdition Winds from Finland.

The first one, Drama, was an act that was formed almost fifteen years ago in the South-West of Russia, close to the Ukrainian border. But afterwards they moved over to the (beautiful) city of Saint Petersburg. I did use the word ‘was’ in my former phrase, because apparently the band decided to stop all activities under this moniker. That’s a pity. But before fading away into eternal oblivion (oops, I seem to be quite ‘dramatic’ – haha, got the hint?), they contributed on this fine split with two pretty lengthy tracks that were written and recorded in 2011, and mixed and mastered in 2014 for this collaboration especially. Create Your Death is a slow piece with a certain Post-Black vibe, reminiscent of Khold, Satyricon and the likes (and hey, didn’t these guys cover the latter a couple of times before?). Highly melodious riffs with quite some prominent tremolo leads, assisted by an extremely heavy rhythm section (grandiose bass lines, cool rhythm guitars and plain yet truly supportive drum patterns), take the lead, nicely collaborating with grim, rattling voices that, once again, remind me of the Norwegian semi-Post-scene (cf. Khold and Bloodthorn). With the second track, Gloria Mortis, I get even more impressed. Still continuing the fine-tuned craftsmanship of the opening track, this second one adds some additional elements, like a couple of harsher accelerations (though the slowness remains the spine of their performance), and the groovy attitude honestly convinces. Despite a specific one-directional approach and the slow performance, there are quite some details to appreciate, leaving no room for boredom. The solos, for example (and this goes for both tracks), are quite cool to listen to. Well, to be honest, this material isn’t world-shaking, but for sure it does convince from the beginning till the end.

The third track on this untitled split is a lengthy piece by Perdition Winds, which I thought to be a blackened side-project of Lie In Ruins (at least several members of Lie In Ruins did start up this band at the eclipse of last decade). Cult Of Kain is a monstrous piece of no-nonsense heaviness, straight-forward, thrashing, chainsawingly brutal. This guitar-driven composition, which has a running time of thirteen minutes, grooves, destroys, hammers with that mid-nineties’ oriented ‘taking-no-prisoners’ mentality. Here too there is no refreshment nor any renewing aspect, but here too the spirit behind the story, and therefore the basement of the result, is highly appreciable. Besides, the grandiose guitar riffs, the simplistic yet attractive bass intermezzo plus guitar solo in the half of the track, and many more elements, make this track a fine piece of aural pleasure too. Once again it’s proven that the lack of originality does not need to be a disadvantage at all. Besides, the many changes in tempo and the different melodic structures, though being very coherent in result, have been written and performed with professionalism and craftsmanship once again. And despite the length of the track, everything builds up, slowly but convinced, into a magisterial apotheosis – because yeah, that finale of this track is just a fabulous ear-satisfaction, isn’t it!

In conclusion: this split is something that will cause nauseous effects when looking for renewing stuff; but open-minded Black Metal freaks, sorry, fans must pay attention. This split for sure isn’t a bad collaboration!

On hieman haikeaa saada vasta nyt arvosteluun viime vuoden parhaisiin black metal -tekeleisiin lukeutuva taltiointi, kun tiedossa on, että paketin toinen puolisko, Drama, on jo uransa päättänyt. Tämää ei tietenkään vähennä itse julkaisun arvoa, sillä varsin oivallisesta joutsenlaulustahan tässä kuitenkin on kyse.

Venäläisen Draman ohella mukana on pääkaupunkilainen Perdition Winds, jolle split-julkaisu on oivallista jatkoa vuoden 2014 albumille.

Two bands are presented on this split. Two bands from neighbouring countries where the temperature can drop very low. Two bands that perform Black Metal. Well one actually, since DRAMA from Russia disbanded in the same year as this EP was released. Too bad, because what they perform here is pretty interesting. The sound and atmosphere on their contibution is melodic and rather passive and reminded of MGLA and the likes. But also of DARKTHRONE from around 1996. Agression and hatred are almost abscent eventhough there's some fierce blasting in the track 'Gloria Mortis'. Vocalist Vindsarg delivers an excellent job and sounds like a mix of Satyr and Jon Nödtveidt. The band was around for 14 years and you can clearly hear this in their mature songwriting. If you like these tracks, you could check their two studio albums "Winds Choir Opera" from 2005 and "As In Empty Grave" from 2010. Especially this latter shows the band in excellent shape and more raging. DRAMA also released a live album called "Live Armageddon" (2004) and an EP from 2003 entitled "Silver Brilliance Of Nocticula". PERDITION WINDS from Finland takes part with one track clocking almost 14 minutes. This track sounds much rawer compared with the other two and 'Cult Of Kain' continues where "Aura Of Suffering" left off. This track is a monster with a break in the middle that drastically slows down after a hectic start, forming space for some macabre solos. After that the slumbering flame is lit again and the track ends the way it started. The production on both parts is top notch and their diversity serves as a fine balance. PERDITION WINDS made me think of LANTERN on "Subterranean Effulgence". Seems like a must for fans, especially since this is the last you'll hear from DRAMA.

I have a feeling that I’ve come into contact with both bands on this split one time or another in the past but I can’t for the fuck remember if I’ve heard anything by them before this disc dropped in on me. DRAMA has a melancholic touch to their black metal without making it DSBM. There is much more of a heavy doomy metal sound to it. Even if I haven’t heard anything from DRAMA prior to this I find myself liking this. It is my kind of melancholy. PERDITION WINDS only contribute with one track to DRAMA’s two. But this is something totally different. Still black metal but much more chaotic and basic. I am not too sure that the two contrasts make for a very nice split. They are in my taste too far from each other. PERDITION WINDS are not bad. I still like the track. It is just not the split partner that I would have liked to have. But hey, why complain when you get two cool bands for the price of one?
