After five years of silence, tech death outfit Victims of Contagion have returned. The Pittsburg outfit earned heaps of critical recognition after the release of their debut EP Parasitic Unborn which featured Bobby Koelble of Death. Their forthcoming follow-up Lamentation of the Flesh Bound also has its fair share of special guests with Michael Keene of The Faceless as well as Phil Tougas of First Fragment, Equipoise, Chthe’ilist, Serocs, and Funebrarum making contributions.

We’re thrilled to share one of the tracks from their upcoming album today at the Vault. “Sisyphus (The Virtue Of Suicide)” is a mid-tempo trek of unceasing bleakness with growling vocals and shifting dynamics that gives us every indication that Lamentations of the Flesh Bound will push them into the forefront of extreme metal. For those not versed in Greek mythology, Sisyphus was the king that was cursed by Zeus to endlessly push a large rock up a steep hill, only to have it roll away upon nearing the top. While many of can relate to his plight of tirelessly working day after day but pushing onward regardless of the struggle, Victims of Contagion offer another option – suicide. Scroll down and listen below.

Victims of Contagion are a death metal band from Pittsburgh, PA and man what a debut album they gave us this week. Released on Sataneth Records, Lamentations Of the Flesh Bound is six songs of brutality. This album is technical, it’s fast, it’s heavy and punishing from start to finish. ‘The Promethean Flame’ opens the album with a beautifully pleated piano intro and I liked how it didn’t just end abruptly so the song can take over but more melded together. When the song picks up and has the arpeggios behind the verses and the groove riff later on, this song offers a lot. I would say the album really picks up from ‘The Human Severance’ on. ‘Corporal Punishment’ is such a killer song with excellent guitar riffs and sweet little runs all over machine gun drums. ‘Sisyphus (The Nature Of Suicide)’ starts off with this more slowed doom sounding riff over double bass just pounding away and the chromatic just crushing riffs. It’s also a song I wish I could make out the lyrics for because I really enjoy The Myth Of Sisyphus. My complaint about this record which isn’t a big one, kind of nit picky but it’s production and mixing seems to lean more toward the low end so at parts it was hard to make out all the guitar. I would highly recommend this album I feel like it pays homage to traditional death metal while putting their own modern spin on it. Don’t miss out on this record.

Victims of Contagion are hailing from Pittsburgh, USA and they were formed in 2005. Although the line-up changed since the inception of the band, this band always tried to create their unique vision of metal in the underground extreme music scene. Judging by the new record, we can safely say that they managed to do it without breaking a sweat. This new album contains 6 songs of technical superb executed death metal. But, the guys also mixed some black metal influences in their music, besides black, I can also hear some thrash metal and subtle melodies beneath blastbeats, groove and brutality. The piano intro to The Promethean Flame, one of the best songs on the record, falsely lulls us to security, but the carnage begins with the first note played and doesn´t stops until the end of the record. Fast solos, thrashy breaks, blastbeats and slamming parts make this record highly valuable listening pleasure. Recommended songs: The Promethean Flame, Corporeal Punishment, Autophagous Horizons.

Step back in time about 4 years ago and we had checked out Victims of Contagion’s first EP, Parasitic Unborn. It was a solid piece of tech-death that didn’t steer away from some lengthier songs, but there was a long period of radio silence. Thankfully, the band is back and just as brutal with their full-length debut in the form of Lamentations of the Flesh Bound.

Everything that Victims of Contagion were able to do successfully from the beginnings are still present with the band and improved upon. While they have an element of tech death to them, it’s not a straight, by the numbers affair. It’s rooted in an older death metal vibe and there’s a nice blend of the two styles (newer being more of the tech-y variety) in the music that keeps them from sounding dated with their approach. There’s more emphasis on the mood and atmosphere of each track, with the incorporation of some light blackened elements and melodies (and a tiny dose of synth) too. Something that benefits the band greatly as they don’t always just go in with a jackhammer and demolish everything in sight. The closing track, “Autophagous Horizons,” settles in at over 12 minutes – moving seamlessly from heavy grooves to scorching speeds to dark/macabre atmosphere to a ripping solo without a dull moment in view. Likewise, the vocal attack routinely switches things up across the extreme metal board and occasional melodic solos and leadwork will frequently catch your ear.

Consistently engaging, Lamentations of the Flesh Bound is an extreme metal release that deserves a larger audience. The combination of technical skill, mood-building, and overall songwriting is one that rivals some of the stronger bands in the scene. Victims of Contagion have a strong sense of what works in death metal and uses it to their full advantage.

“Sisyphus (The Virtue of Suicide)” erinnert mich zu beginn an Morbid Angel in seiner Spielweise.

Victims of Contagion are a death metal band from the US and this is their debut album.

Victims of Contagion play death metal that mixes brutality with technicality, resulting in songs that aren’t overly technical just for the sake of it. Instead, the technicality is used to forge tracks that place the song at the heart of what the band do.

Elements of both the new-school, modern approach to technical death metal can be heard, as well as the old-school, classic style. It’s an interesting, endearing, and lesser-done approach, and Victims of Contagion pull it off nicely.

Amidst the brutality there’s more texture and nuance than you might expect spread across these 38 minutes. Moments of surprising atmospheric depth are sometimes found, as well as aspects of the progressive style that enhance sections here and there. Occasionally there’s a blackened sheen to some of the riffs, especially when things speed up, and dark melodies and scathing screams tear out of the music.

The level of musicianship is high, as you’d probably expect. As stated above though, this is mostly kept in check so it doesn’t overwhelm. That said, there’s still plenty of technical wizardry to satisfy, as well as guest solos from members of The Faceless and First Fragment.

Overall this is a very strong album. Well-written and with plenty of substance to it, the material on this album has longevity built-in.

Very highly recommended.

US technical death metal

Morbid Angel.

Рекомендации - The human severance.

Being formed in the far 2005 this is actually the first full-length material from the Pittsburgh-based technical death metal brigade – Victims of Contagion. Prior to this, they had the self-released "Parasitic Unborn" EP in 2014. Musically, we have a polished mixture between technical death metal and deathcore. During the over 38 minutes stuff the following band names popped in my mind: Death, Cynic, Morbid Angel, Obscura, Spawn of Possession, Psycroptic, Fleshgod Apocalypse and The Faceless, just to mention you a few. The recording line-up – Chris Edison (vocals), Chuck Forsythe (rhythm & lead guitars, singing bowl, piano & synth), Jon Haden (rhythm & lead guitars), Anthony Zello (lead guitar), Justin Gizzi (bass) and Mike Rush (drums & vocals) – is in the knowing of how to use their skills in a proper way, therefore the six resulting songs are of a flawless production. Their song-structures are enough sophisticated, nonetheless I miss the real innovations, memorable harmonies and own ideas there. I really dig how the CD sounds, it's simply huge, but from my musical point of view these six compositions give nothing intriguing to the listener of the 21st century. I believe the band is still in search of their own style and where to go musically. So let's wish them tons of luck on that road and hopefully with their next release we can witness those innovations altogether!!!

Первый отметился в “Of Species Departed”, второй сыграл в “Corporeal Punishment”.

Short piano moment kicks off the album and then, brutal vocals and death metal starts off to rule the realm of this album.  The band made me familiar with music direction of the album pretty fast though. It`s technical death metal that completes their songs.

Lamentations Of The Flesh Bound is full of mazes - very fast picking shreds on guitar - sophisticated solos, technical metal meets progressive metal which is rooted in modern yet traditional death metal sound. Pace of the album is fast, drums go even faster. Their drummer`s play is very focus, deliver quality blast beats and flawless technical arrangements just as good as guitarists do. Vocal growls (more than 2 band members are involved in doing it) are aggressive&gruesome, very brutal which fits in between a complex riffs. The band won't let you breathe even with a slower song like Sisyphus (The Virtue Of Suicide) because the music on this album has many demanding guitar layers and textures, songs are not much linear - with more frequency you can expect something new or unexpected that the band has not play earlier. Album has multi-twists and turns - brain activity increases, no songs are the same, every track is an different planet and band`s musicianship is extraordinary when they exploring it.  Lamentations Of The Flesh Bound also has some atmosphere implant in its music skeleton, not just a will to destroy everything.

I really can't complain about this amazing technical death metal album as it hits intense.

Victims of Contagion are a Pittsburgh-based Tech Death act that have been active since 2005, taking a good 14 years before releasing an EP and this, their full-length debut, a year afterwards. Guess they spent most of that time refining their craft, as Lamentations of the Flesh Bound is a prime example of how you do this kind of thing correctly. The playing is as professional and highwire as you'd expect from the genre, reminding me of similar acts like Immolation, Incantation, and Demilich. Thankfully, they refrain from the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink songwriting approach that plagues many of their contemporaries and actually write some damn solid songs that incorporate a rumbling rhythm section to balance out and inform the hyper-speed technicality. They even have the good sense to slow down in places, mainly on the tracks "Sisyphus (The Virtue of Suicide)" and "Autophagous Horizons", the latter of which is a 12-minute behemoth that closes the album in a whirlwind of dark, intricate riffing, oppressive heaviness, and startling rhythm changes. Overall, Victims of Contagion have come out of the gate as one of the better bands in their style, showing a clear understanding that the role of technicality in Death Metal is to support the face-smashing heaviness rather than distract from it. Well worth your time.

Three guitarists and other guest guitarists play on this debut full-length that is only six songs, but 38 minutes, long. As with the album title The Promethean Flame is a very apt title for a band with longer than average songs. The listener may suspect some progressive element within Lamentations OF The Flesh Bound. The song features a short piano intro and it is followed by Chris Edison's screams and growls and music somewhat reminiscent of Sadist's style. Mid-paced metal interspersed with brief faster sections and solos. Of Species Departed features Faceless' Michael Keene on lead guitar. The song has varying elements but they do not fragment the song too much. The solos are a highlight as too are when the song picks up the pace. The Human Severance feels a bit more like a standard death metal song. Corporeal Punishment features Philippe Tougas (First Fragment, Funebrarum, etc.) on lead guitars. It is a faster song with a faster solo and the highlight of Lamentations Of The Flesh Bound. Sisyphus (The Virtue Of Suicide) is almost a counter point to the song before it. In terms of pace at least, it is heavy and sometimes slow. Autophagous Horizons is a 12-minutes long closer and it has time to move around in a long instrumental section and showcase technical and even progressive slower and faster sounds while retaining a 90s death metal sound aided. All aided by Edison's traditional death metal vocal style it is an interesting song that avoids the pitfalls of long for the sake of cramming everything in songs.

Naštěstí Victims Of Contagion nejsou natolik chtiví rozsekání nálady během poslechu a dokážou jet i několik pasáží bez prudkého točení kormidlem v tempu.

Tahle písnička totiž vybočuje i svou délkou (dvanáct minut) a díky jejímu komplikovanému průběhu vás spolehlivě udrží v pozoru. Ovšem chybičku tahle skladba přeci jen má – fade out.

Dále našinci mají nahrávky mnohem rozmanitější a členitější, kdežto Victims Of Contagion se brzy začnou opakovat.

I have an on/off relationship with technical death metal. It all depends on the mood I am in really if it is a hit or a miss. Right now I feel kinda cheerful and ready to take on this US band and their album. I will have to see how I feel after I am finished with it. I can say that I do not despise this. In fact I find myself liking what I hear. There is something about this that appeals to me. There is a familiarity feeling about this. Perhaps it is because at times it reminds me of latter day Death that I fancy it. But fancy it I do. This was a nice surprise. I might even dig out my old latter day Death CDs and play them back to back with this one.
