As I write this article I am in Iceland at a music festival, experiencing the strange effects of daylight throughout the waking hours, even at 2:30 a.m., when I finally fell into an exhausted slumber earlier this morning.

Iceland is just a few degrees south of the Arctic Circle, that imaginary line around the Earth that marks the latitude above which the sun does not set on the summer solstice and does not rise on the winter solstice. The summer solstice arrives on June 21st, one week from today.

The rhythms of the body rebel at so much light, but there is at least a temporary remedy for the disorientation, a balance to be found as the mind is seduced into deepest darkness through the sound of “Illusions“, the song from the debut album by Thorns of Grief that’s been devouring the light around me this morning.

The song by this Polish one-man project sounds as if it was recorded in a sodden crypt deep below the world of verdant life and shining skies. Combining the pacing, the weight, and the haunting beauty of funeral doom with the ravages of death metal vocals, “Illusions” is at once haunting and harrowing, hypnotic and fearsome.

The hypnosis begins with minutes of slow, spooky notes softly echoing over a distant droning hum. When the volume increases, the deeper tones become an ominous presence, abrasive chords strike and linger, the drums eject bursts of battering, the voice emits ghastly growls and howls. The gruesome guitar emanations become more animated — moaning and wailing. Notes ring out in ghostly splendor as the guitar generates an immersive cloud of writhing abrasion.

The volume diminishes into a glacial, morbid melody, making a brief space for hopeless spoken words — only a brief respite until the drumming shifts into a titanic lurch, the guitar hammering a cold and murderous refrain. Those gleaming ghostly tones ring out again above the distorted, crushing weight of what surrounds them.

When it all ends, it’s as if a spell has been broken… the dank darkness begins to recede, the vaporous spirits begin to vanish… the ceaseless daylight becomes noticeable again… but it’s easy enough to close the eyes, press play again, and plunge the soul into chilling depths once more.

“Illusions” is one of five songs on Anthems To My Remains. The memorable cover art is by Mary Kankava, and the logo by Spiral Occultism.

A new one-man Funeral Doom treat is here – it’s the hypnotically devouring Thorns of Grief. The project’s full-length debut, “Anthems to My Remains”, also brings some nicely combined Death metal influences while sticking to its doomy atmosphere.

First of all, this record carries so many different expressions and emotions that I actually had to write it all down while listening, word by word: dark, haunting, pain, anxiety, aggression, infirmity, frustration, despair and, of course, as the project name itself says – grief. Nebiros, the author, avoided the assumed risk of Funeral Doom being dull, which we as listeners are aware of from the beginning of the record. Instead, you experience all the magic of the subgenre by diving more and more into the music as if you were travelling to a different state of reality.

“Anthems to My Remains” starts off with haunting and eerie tunes of a self-titled song, put there to introduce the whole project. It consists of four longer tracks and a short one that is basically 2.5 minutes of growingly anxious repetition – it’s playing with your mind. While not technically difficult, the work of each instrument is totally integrated to this musical entity. Especially the piano, which is clean, dark, and borderly innocent-sounding. Production-wise, a bit flat maybe. And I really liked the gradation of the vocals – they go from pain trough aggression to powerlessness, sounding very honest. They contrast their emotional expression with the instrumentals whose expression is more atmospherical, giving us a healthy duality. Overall, this is both an interesting listen and an experience!

Thorns  Of  Grief  are  a  solo  project  from  Poland  that  plays  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Anthems  To  My  Remains"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  and  Dying  Sun  Records.

Distorted  yet  melodic  riffing  starts  off  the  album  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  before  going  into  a  heavier  funeral  doom  metal  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  along  with  a  few  grim  screams  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  onto  the  recording.

Tragic  sounding  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  90's  era  doom  and  death  metal  influences  but  also  keeping  it  modern  at  the  same  time.  One  of  the  tracks  is  an  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  on  the  following  songs.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as a  brief  use  of  whispered  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

In  my  opinion  Thorns  Of  Grief  are  a  very  great  sounding  funeral  doom  metal  solo  project and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  album.

Pit-Art CD.

Mystic Rites are a project from Poland that surprised a couple of times with independently released material. Main member Nebiros however had some ideas that did not totally fit to Mystic Rites, so he decided to start another outfit. This one eventually got baptised as Thorns Of Grief. We’re talking about the year 2018.

In Autumn from that very same year, Nebiros did canalise some of these ideas into actual compositions, for which he took care of production, mix and mastering himself. This resulted in a gathering of five tracks, which got pressed on compact disc in an edition of five hundred copies. In a partnership of Russia’s Satanath Records and Dutch label Dying Sun Records, this first effort got released as Anthems To My Remains. I wonder, seen the title, whether there is something personal behind the concept; I actually think it is…

In addition: the CD edition got released in jewel case, including a four-page booklet, which includes the jolly lyrics (in English). And oh yes, the cool artwork has been done by Hellcatfairyart artist Mary Kankava (think: Ragnell, Mourner, Stromptha, Haissem etc.).

Let these songs be melodies for your utter decadence. A doom of your love and spirit in a world of complete and odorous waste. Nothing shall be left for those who feel nothing and no tears shall be wept over ones like you.

Anthems To My Remains brings a form of Funeral doom that essentially sticks to the roots of the genre. It’s highly melodic, with twin / tremolo leads and a monumentally heavy rhythm section, and very low growls. That’s the spine of the tradition, and there is nothing wrong with that. Actually, the quality of both song writing and performance reaches the level of the better bands in the genre, from Skepticism to Evoken, from Ahab to Thergothon, if you want to.

Yet then again, Thorns Of Grief are distinctive too in several ways. Nebiros does add some unique elements, both instrumentally as composition-wise. I am not just talking about the many tempo-changes (*) (though, believe me: the better part is slow, oh so slow indeed) or the use of intermezzi with Grand Piano (cf. a hymn like A Longing) or acoustic guitars (even though these ones are of high importance, evidently). It is not that easy to define, but there is something that makes this outfit an entity on its own; Thorns Of Grief somehow are able to create a specific own sound. And since the result is not bad at all, this fact isn’t but a highlight. Yes, positivism from undersigned when reviewing a Funeral Doom album; why not…

(*): listen to the opening sequence of Till Our Rebirth to notice the doomed essence… not! What a blasting whirlwind (which returns), and then again: why not!

The use of synths is limited, but when used it is majestic, for it gives a specific direction to the sonic approach. Higher mentioned Till Our Rebirth, for example, comes with some hypnotising keyboards, besides a mesmerizing semi-acoustic passage and additional blackened screams - and this makes me happy (sic). It gives the whole a gloomy touch of hypnosia, a dimension that trespasses the limitations of the genre. Other excerpts with keyboards (or acoustic passages) too are beautifully (and professionally) mixed into the whole concept. The few synth lines in the last track, for example (Illusions) are simply mesmerizing.

The production is quite rough and unpolished, actually quite down-earthed and low-tuned. Okay, nobody craves for a clinically correct sound quality, but it might be my sole remark – although negligible in comparison to the qualitative high-standard compositions. Besides, that production reminds me a lot of the origins of the Doom-Death scene (and then I am referring to the ‘real’ one, and not the pathetic semi-atmospheric pop-goth one). And since the border in between the darkest edges of (Traditional) Doom Death Metal and Funeral Doom are nothing but empty-minded constructions, this might be a surplus. Yet still it might be a tiny disappointment to notice that the back-strings (rhythm and bass guitars) for example are too submissive to the totality.

"The Deceit of Materiality" mezcla estilos de forma asombrosa.

Here comes an one-man project created by Nebiros, who took as a point of honor to play all instruments and do all vocals to make this album happened. Thorns Of Grief was formed in Gdynia/ northern Poland, in 2018.

In a first song you can hear strong doom metal accents, the music obscurity flows very slowly, is full of nihilistic alienation and emotional emptiness. Beside that, the atmosphere takes you on a further journey that the band offers, preceded by well-composed ideas for guitars, melancholic parts played on keyboards and slow burn death metal vocals. By the end of the seventh minute I was convinced that it would be only funeral doom metal album, but there is a bit more to it. The song ends with a quicker moment in terms of first two My Dying Bride albums.

A Longing is instrumental keyboard-track which sound like a grieving after loss of a close person that you still can feel presence of.

A track Till Our Rebirth is played differently than the first one of the album. There is more death metal here that sounds darker, the keys create an interesting background for the metal sound. Further on, the band is coming back to playing doom metal with heavy sounding guitars where the atmosphere pushes you to the eternal shadow, somewhere beyond the reach of light ... Every few minutes, music ideas changes within the song, which makes the album sound like a monolith of past times.

I couldn't get into next song at all. Lack of creativity has occurred at this boring doom metal point in the beginning of song. Then came a calmer-ambient fragment that has not changed much in music either. Nothing has happened in plus until the end of the song actually. I don't feel similar vibe this band has had in the first three songs of the album which are really good ones when comes to exploration of grief in doom metal sound.

And time for final track of the record which for far too long is just like a funeral caravan, with deadly serious visions/illusions about death in lyrics..Terryfying but not interesting stuff at all. Musically it`s better song from previous one, and the second half of the track reminds me of band like Gallileous (OLD).

The album production is amateur, when you get use to it, it may turn out that the music itself is quite interesting, most of the time it is for me, only I prefer songs from 1 to 3.

Thorns of Grief is a Polish funeral doom/death metal project shaped by Nebiros of Mystic Rites in 2018. He performed all the instruments and recorded all the vocal parts on "Anthems to My Remains", which is in fact the debut release of Thorns of Grief. The CD lists 5 songs and lasts over 47 minutes. The music found there is truly funeral-like. I mean it is quite sad, slow (except a few fast parts) and extremely atmospheric. What's more, in several places I felt the impact of Evoken's debut album "Embrace the Emptiness", which is a good thing, taking into account that is my favorite album from the US undertakers. Needless to say, every composition of Nebiros has a very deep emotional charge that is permeated by melancholy, therefore thus exclusively vibrating the tones of despair and death first to the listener's ears and then to its subconsciousness respectively. It is a remarkable doom/death metal album, where the affection of longing for death is included by default. Already can't wait to listen to its continuation! But until then, let me infer to you once more that "Anthems to My Remains" is a flawless creation of art and hence warmly recommended for the followers of both musical genres!!!

Zjevně však potřeboval jisté pohnutky ventilovat mnohem vláčněji a chmurněji, k čemuž si vytvořil právě Thorns Of Grief.

Atmosféra pohřebně zamýšlené desky určitě nebude hrát všemi barvami a ostrostí. Do Boha proč…

Některé pasáže mi totiž evokují dávný debut Shadows Of The Damned našinců Avenger, kteří na této nahrávce zněli vyloženě dark metalově a taková ta hutná nálada s dobře prostorově nazvučenými škopky mi tady občas vyjede na mysl. To si pak spokojeně lebedím a nějaké pohřební dekórum jest kacířsky zneuctěno. A tak je to správné. Třeba třetí kousek Till Our Rebirth shledávám jako nejlepším songem desky, protože v sobě má hodně zla. Tady jednoduše vidím směr, kterým by případná pozdější tvorba mohla kráčet.

Vzato celkovým souhrnným pohledem není to marné dílo. Ono vlastně i samotné funeral doomové rozpoložení není vyloženě špatné.

Imagine standing on the northern shores of Pomorskie in Poland observing and withstanding the raging waves of the Baltic Sea in the dead of winter. Such would be the soundtrack to the ambience.

Part funeral doom, part grind, part atmospheric and yet another part psychedelic metal and New Age, Anthems To My Remains is sometimes fast, sometimes slow and always adorned with sub-sonic ferocious growling as wave after huge wave crashes into the rocky shores. It is a horrific, brutal and dismal sound whose atmosphere comes from that mix of distorted drowned out chords and a crushing death that is best exemplified on the grinding whirlwind start of Til Our Rebirth. Think Ad Cinerem meets Dusk meets Sun O))). There is a lot to admire regarding this subterranean entity, but alas the inconsistency gets to you and the prolonged ambient passages and synthesizers can weigh upon a metal fan’s verdict.

Polish metal has been with me since the 1980s, in one form or another. I have had bad experiences and I have had great experiences like with any other scene. Thankfully the better ones have dominated and some have even become my all time fave bands. I don’t know if THORNS OF GRIEF will be my next polish fave but I am willing to give them the chance. To me a totally wonderful funeral doom album is one that brings about the feeling of laying on your death bed. It should feel like the music is taking you on your final voyage. I get that feeling from this one. In that way this feels like a requiem. But that is just me.
