Almost seven years after the appearance of their debut album Evil Seeds, the Danish melodic death metal band Sylvatica are at last returning with their sophomore full-length Ashes and Snow, which will be co-released on April 20th by Satanath Records and Pest Records. Two songs from the album have surfaced so far, and today we premiere a third one through a lyric video. Its name is “Helios“.

The words narrate the apocalyptic impact of extravagant solar flares on Earth and its human inhabitants, whose fragility is exposed by the invasion of those ravishing solar spirits. But while the lyrics are harrowing, the music is, in a word, spectacular — the kind of experience that gets the heart pumping and the head spinning.

In fashioning this fast-paced and thoroughly exhilarating experience Sylvatica deploy both symphonic and folk elements, along with ferocious vocal assaults, jolting rhythms, darting and swirling guitar work, dancing flute tones, and glorious, panoramic melodies. The lyrics may be utterly calamitous, but the expertly-executed sounds are as wondrous, blazing, and celestial as the home star from which it takes its name.

Listening to the song, it’s no wonder that the labels recommend the new album for fans of such bands as Wintersun, Kalmah, Ensiferum, and Children of Bodom. And if you get caught up by the thrills of this song as much as we have, you’ll definitely want to immediately throw yourselves into those two previously released songs, “Creation” and “Pillars of Light” — and you’ll find streams of both of those below.

The album was mixed and mastered by Jacob Olsen (JBO Sound), and the eye-catching cover art was made by Pierre-Alain (3mmi Design).

This is the second album from Danish melodic death metallers Sylvatica.

The core of Ashes and Snow‘s 43 minutes is that of melodic death metal. This is then augmented by folk and symphonic metal influences. If you think you’d enjoy a band that mixes together aspects of groups such as Ensiferum, Wintersun, Nightwish, Dark Tranquillity, and Children of Bodom, then Ashes and Snow should be of interest to you.

After a very luscious and uplifting introduction, the band tear through six songs of largely fast and aggressive music. The epic streak that Sylvatica so ably demonstrate in the intro is not confined to it, and they flex their symphonic muscles quite regularly across Ashes and Snow. This is merged skilfully with a death metal base that’s surprisingly burly for this sort of thing, at least in places; Sylvatica aren’t afraid to get a bit brutal, they just do so in well-dressed style.

The songs strike a good balance between ostentatious symphonic elements, heavy aggression, and strong melodic colour. Of the latter, the leads, and in particular the solos, are very well-realised. The bass is more audible than usual for something of this ilk too, and makes a welcome contribution to the music.

Sylvatica are clearly skilled at what they do; a lot of work has obviously been done on these tracks, and they boast a Smörgåsbord of sonic delights for the listener to indulge in.

I enjoyed Ashes and Snow, and heartily recommend it for fans of symphonic and melodic death metal.

Check it out.

Danish band Sylvatica is out with their album "Ashes and Snow, and this is quite the curious example of an extreme metal production. Raspy, dark growls and occasional shrieks caters for the vocal department here, while the music itself moves through a nice little set of different orientations. Chamber music style plucked guitar and violin creations often with careful orchestral backing sits side to side with intense symphonic metal parts and driving power metal sections, with more intense extreme metal runs kicks off at regular intervals. Liberal use of melody lines that have a distinct folk music orientation to them is a liberally used feature, including what sounds like violin soloing also in the more intense parts. Otherwise the album is mixed to sound thundering and loud, and perhaps to a higher degree than what is ordinary for this style of music at that. Symphonic folk death metal may well be a summary here, and those who find such a blend alluring should have a good chance of finding this album enjoyable.

Consigliatissimo!

While searching Satanath Records’ Bandcamp profile I hoped I stumbled across something worthwhile with Sylvatica’s sophomore full length. What I found was melodic, heroic, and extremely caustic; something like old Amorphis but with twice the conviction and technical capabilities, with some Amon Amarth and Enslaved poured into the cauldron. I got the impression of setting sail through an endless landscape of icebergs, watching the sky, the horizon, and even the water catch fire in the wake of your sailing vessel. The carefully thought out, meticulously arranged, classically tinged intro promises a memorable collection of tracks on the way. “Ashes and Snow” doesn’t disappoint as its consistent heaviness and relentless drumming add infinite weight to its classical and folk/pagan/symphonic elements. It’s a marriage made this side of Valhalla that’s not too overbearing for the unprepared metal fan who hadn’t expected such crushing songs. Sylvatica travels all the way back to 1994/95 and develops the density and thickness of progressive death metal as well as its atmosphere and proficient melody. The deep, guttural, and higher-pitched vocal fry are more than suitable for an album like this, fulfilling the role of a berserker captain leading his throng (represented by the melodic backing vocals) into battle, and the guitar solos are enough to stimulate listeners of Yngwie Malmsteen. All these fundamentals are properly layered and granted as they need to be, coming across as natural results of the songwriting. For a band’s second album, “Ashes and Snow” is presented as a masterpiece, and it’s more than worth a chance if you’re looking for music that’s simultaneously heavy and epic.

Canciones a destacar: Halls of Extinction, Ashes and Snow, Cosmic Strings y Pillars of Light.

¿Aún no?

On rigole! Bref!

On va voir cela.

It has been 7 years since the last Sylvatica album, ‘Evil Deeds’, and these Danish folk/death metallers are back on Satanath Records with a brand new record, ‘Ashes and Snow’. It is out now.

The piano and string led arrangements of the lush ‘Daybreak’ ushers you into an album that tries to blend the ethereal hook of folk with the savagery of death metal, and it works to a great degree. The title track has some great melodic death metal riffing, and the atmospheric flourishes and grand warband chant style cleaner vocals bring that folk metal in at just the right times. The guitarwork is stellar; the melody never feels forced in but more of a natural progression to each track. ‘Pillars of Light’ has big Ensiferum energy, a song that feels like a stirring tale of battles won and friends lost. Sylvatica do that triumphant battle metal style well, and their musical chops are good enough that it never feels derivative.

From the sweeping grandiosity of ‘Cosmic Strings’, through the fiery, thrashy ‘Helios’ into the closing spiralling odyssey of triumphant guitar heroism and infectious melodies of ‘Halls of Extinction’, Sylvatica’s work is inspiring, instantly memorable and comfortably encompasses both powerful folk metal anthems and plenty of deathly riff goodness to satisfy even the most fearsome of warriors. An irresistible mix that I cannot recommend enough.

Sylvatica  are  a  band  from  Denmark  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  black,  death,  pagan  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Ashes  And  Snow"  which  was  released  as  a  join  effort  between  Satanath  and  Pest  Records.

Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  and  symphonic  elements  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  folk  music  elements.

Clean  pagan  vocals  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  a  later  track  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  misanthropy,  science,  mythology,  cosmology  and  apocalyptic  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Sylvatica  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  black,  death,  pagan  and  folk  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.

Takových všemožných mixů už zde bylo, ne vždy to dopadlo bez zadrhnutí a až příliš často a příliš silně zde rezonoval komerční šotek. Technicky vytříbená a nápaditá instrumentace dovoluje „Ashes And Snow“ popustit spřežení opratě do té míry, až není třeba přemýšlet, co za všechny metalové styly SYLVATICA smíchala do sebe. Jenže ono to pohromadě skvěle funguje, a nejen jenom funguje.
