I jumped on the Dark Plague bandwagon plague-wagon with their fourth album Be More or Fade Away, which was released in 2019. They now have a fifth one named The Threshold of Death which is slated for release on April 14th by Satanath Records (Georgia) and Fetzner Death Records (Germany). For the new one, the band’s core trio enlisted Kévin Paradis (Benighted, Mithridatic) as session drummer.
One song from the new album, “Beyond the Threshold of Death“, is streaming now. Fans of high-speed percussive pyrotechnics will find the song worthwhile, as another sign (as if more were needed) of Kévin Paradis‘ talents. But that’s far from the only reason to embrace the song.
Like Glyph‘s song above, this one features an alluring bass line at the outset, and an even more alluring riff that rings, one that’s both sinister and glorious. And then you may be startled (though less startled now) that a solemn singing voice arises, but it’s one that morphs into scalding goblin-screams and beastly snarls.
As the song proceeds, its key motifs burrow deeper into the listener’s head, but the band also switch them, altering the tempo and the moods, with a rapidly flickering lead that accelerates the movement into delirium, propelled further by hyper-speed drumming and the frantic immensity of the bass. And the band give you a chance to bob your head and shake your leg before the end too, and to spin around a bonfire with all the levitating witches.
Dark Plague are a band from France that plays a very melodic and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "The Threshold Of Death" which will be released in April as a joint effort between Satanath and Fetzner Death Records.
Clean playing starts off the album before going into a heavier direction while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams which also have their grim moments while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. A lot of the music is also very heavily influenced by the classic Scandinavian style along with some spoken word parts also being utilized on a couple of tracks and synths can also be heard briefly.
Dark Plague plays a style of black metal that is very melodic and old school in the classic Scandinavian tradition. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness and death themes.
In my opinion Dark Plague are a very great sounding melodic and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording.

Mit „The Threshold of Death“ veröffentlichen die seit 2004 aktiven Dark Plaque aus dem französischen Lille ihr fünftes Studioalbum. Nach einer kurzen ruhigen Passage mit atmosphärischen Gitarren legt man mit hohem Tempo und melodischen Black Metal los. Sessiondrummer Kevin Paradis (Benighted) tritt zeitweise so stark aufs Gaspedal, dass man sich als Hörer die Frage stellt, ob wirklich ein Drummer aus Fleisch und Blut hinter der Schießbude sitzt oder die Franzosen vielleicht doch auf einen Drumcomputer zurückgegriffen haben. Ganz allgemein finde ich den Sound der Scheibe etwas steril und obwohl der Gitarrist stets (beileibe nicht schlechte) Melodien spielt, rast zumindest die erste Hälfte des Albums mehr einem D-Zug gleich an einem vorüber, ohne wirklich im Ohr hängenzubleiben.
Sowohl musikalisch als auch gesanglich mehr Abwechslung bietet das dem ehemaligen Mayhem-Sänger gewidmete „Dead – Tribute To Dead“, bei dem Gitarrist Lord of Misery den Gesang übernimmt, welcher stimmlich gänzlich anders klingt als Infestus, der bei den restlichen Stücken als Sänger agiert. Auch auf den folgenden Songs klingen Dark Plaque dann am stärksten, wenn sie mal die Geschwindigkeit etwas herausnehmen und mehr im Midtempo agieren. Vor allem „Styx“ sticht mit seinem Wechsel aus Midtempo-Parts und rasendem Geknüppel sowie der gesprochenen Passage am Schluss aus dem übrigen Material hervor und ist für mich neben „Dead – Tribute To Dead“ sicher das stärkste Stück des Albums.
„The Threshold of Death“ ein solides Black Metal-Album geworden, das technisch vollauf überzeugen kann, dem es jedoch letztlich noch ein wenig an Eigenständigkeit und Wiedererkennungswert mangelt.
